The Fifth Annual Catholic Camp Summit
Monday January 14th - Thursday January 17th
The diocese of Wheeling-Charleston is honored and excited to host our extended catholic camping family for this year's gathering! As you look over the information provided, please don't hesitate to call us with any questions. 304-335-2165
What is the Catholic Camps Summit? (And what it isn't)
Several years back a group of camp directors from various catholic camps would see each other every year at the national ACA (American Camp Association) conference. Every year they would enjoy spending time together and would dream getting together when they had more time to share life and thus the Catholic Camp Summit was born. That dream has become a reality! Every year, people who share in the unique vocation of ministering to young people on behalf of the Catholic Church in some sort of camp/outdoor/adventure setting gather at a catholic camp to be together, pray, share stories, swap ideas, and get support from people who might actually understand what you do for a living.
While you will learn things and get ideas from other camps, this is not primarily an educational opportunity, rather the design and hope of this event is to build community amongst Catholic camping professionals. There are great conferences and resources out there for questions like what registration software to use or food service dynamics, and you should check those out. You will get to spend time with people while you are here that can answer those questions as well and you are encouraged to discuss such things, but the main content and roundtables of this event are geared towards topics and conversations that are unique to the ministries of camp/outdoor/adventure ministries in the Catholic Church.
The Bishop Hodges Pastoral Center is a 1400 acre property that is home to the our diocesan summer camps and service mission program. On property there are a variety of housing options and our event will be utilizing the hotel-style retreat center. Rooms have either one queen bed or two double beds in them; all rooms have their own bathroom. All bedding and towels are provided.
You are paying to get here which is no small feat and so there is no charge for lodging or food during your stay. All meals on the schedule are included.
We are centrally isolated in the heart of West Virginia, which is beautiful and inconvenient. We are located approximately 3.5 hours from the airport in Pittsburgh and about 4 from DC. The drive from Pittsburgh is definitely the better drive during the winter. If you are flying and want to consider carpooling from the airport, let us know and we will help put you in contact with others doing the same.
